What a TMK is

A Tax Map Key is the number Hawaii uses to identify a parcel of land. Every parcel in the state has one, and it is the identifier the counties assess taxes against and the state indexes its records by.

It is more precise than an address. Many parcels in rural districts have no street address at all, and addresses get reused, mistyped, and reassigned. The TMK does not move.

Where to find yours

01County property tax bill. Printed near the top, usually labeled Tax Map Key or Parcel ID. The easiest place to look.
02Your deed. Recorded documents identify the land by TMK alongside the legal description.
03Title report. Appears on the first page of a preliminary report or commitment.
04County parcel viewer. Each county runs a map where clicking a lot shows its TMK. Or click the lot on the map here and skip the step.

How to read the format

A TMK is a hierarchy, read left to right, each part narrowing the one before it. Here is a real Hawaii Island parcel broken apart.

Island or division
3 is Hawaii Island. 1 is Oahu, 2 is Maui County including Molokai and Lanai, 4 is Kauai. Often written in parentheses, sometimes as a leading digit.

A large area of the island. Zone 1 on Hawaii Island covers the Puna district.

A subdivision of the zone.

The map sheet. Neighbors on the same block usually share a plat number.

The individual lot within the plat. This is the piece of land itself.

You will see the same number written several ways: (3) 1-5-063-041, 3-1-5-063-041, or 315063041. They are the same parcel, and the lookup above accepts any of them.

9 digits: a parcel of landNine digits identify the land itself. This is what you want for almost everything: taxes, zoning, hazard designations, and wastewater records.

12 or 13 digits: a CPR unitMore digits at the end mean a condominium property regime unit: one unit on a parcel that contains several. Common in condos, and also on agricultural land split into CPR units without being formally subdivided.

State records are generally held against the underlying 9-digit parcel, not the unit. A wastewater system found on a CPR parcel may serve several units, and who pays for a conversion is set by the condominium documents rather than by state records.

By county

The four counties assign and publish TMKs separately, so formatting conventions and the amount of detail on each county's own viewer differ. The statewide parcel layer indexes all of them under one schema, which is what the lookup queries.

Statewide counts are the state parcel layer's totals as measured in September 2026. A CPR parcel is counted once regardless of how many units sit on it. Launch coverage is Hawaii Island, Kauai, Maui, and Molokai; Oahu follows.

What the lookup returns

For any parcel in coverage, with the source layer and snapshot date attached to each field. Findings are what state records indicate as of that date, not determinations.

Wastewater system statusSystem class on record: cesspool, septic, aerobic, or soil treatment. Where there is no record, the report says so and gives the island's coverage rate.
Flood zoneFEMA designation for the parcel footprint.
